Saturday 2nd June was the culmination of the schools’ athletics season with Tullamore playing host to the Irish Schools Track and Field Championships. Coláiste Phobal Ros Cré was proudly represented by brothers Kyle and Adam Dooley. Kyle was first to compete in the final of the boys Junior 200m. He flew out of the blocks and ran an incredible bend, powering home to pick up bronze in a new personal best of 23.69 seconds.
Next up for the school was Adam Dooley he was bravery personified. He suffered a knee injury in training prior to the finals yet pushed through the pain barrier to compete in the senior long jump. He managed three jumps but unfortunately his injury ultimately managed to scupper his medal chances. The boys were a credit to their family, school and the other athletes who competed with great distinction throughout the year.
Green-Schools Travel Flag
On Wednesday May 23rd three members of the Green-Schools Committee (Ahlam Seyf – 2nd year, Katelyn Fitzpatrick – 3rd year and Ostinija Galvanauskaite – 3rd year), along with their teacher, Ann-Marie Mullen, travelled to Kilkenny to collect our fourth Green Flag, for our work on the Travel Theme. Our Travel Officer, Dara Dever from An Taisce, carried out four Travel Surveys with students and the results were displayed on the Green-Schools noticeboard.
Throughout the year, the Green-Schools Committee encouraged all students to travel to school in a sustainable manner. More environmentally-friendly ways to travel include walking, where possible, taking the bus, cycling, car-pooling with friends and neighbours, park and stride, ie being dropped at a location and walking the rest of the journey.
Awareness was raised in the school and the surveys revealed that there was a significant increase in students walking or car-pooling.
A slogan competition was held during the year and the winning slogan by Isra Saleem, 6th year was “Cycle, car-pool or walk to school, instead of burning fossil fuels”.
We were delighted to achieve our Green flag for Travel and look forward to working on the next theme, which is Biodiversity.
