On Wednesday 22nd of January the County schools badminton championship was held in Colaiste Phobal with seven teams from the Colaiste competing in three age groups, U14, U16 and U19.

Our U14 team of Aaron Loughnane, Jack Kirwan, Roddy Teehan and Neil Maher were unlucky to finish second in their competition, while our U16A team of Jack Finnegan, William Cummins, Cian Cordial and Padraic Marks were victorious with a hard fought win over Our Ladys Templemore in the final which means they would go on to represent the school in Munster. Our U16B and C team were unlucky not to make the semi-finals but gained good experience for next year when playing stronger opposition, U16B Ruairi Murphy, Aaron Moloney, Ben Spencer, Vincent Kennedy, U16C Jake Delaney, Daniel Coonan, Cian Dwan, Luke O’Donnell.

We also had three teams in the U19 age group with our A and B team making it all the way to the final ensuring that colaiste phobail’s name would be on the cup. The first team however proved too strong for their fellow students winning convincingly to take the title and a place in the Munster finals. U19A Enda Moloney, John McCabe, Tony O’Connor, Paddy Quinlan. U19B Conal Teehan, Darragh Tomlinson, Steven Tierney, Evan Hassett. The U19C team got some valuable game experience in their group but unfortunately failed to make the semi-finals, team: David Williams, Saqlain Sadiq, Owen Kennedy, Joe Ahern.

On the 30th of January the U16 and U19 winning teams went to the University of Limerick to compete in the Munster finals. The U19 team started against their old rivals Kanturk from Cork and were extremely unlucky to lose two tight games which meant losing the match 4-2 instead of winning 4-2. In the second game the opposition were the Clare champions from Killaloe, again the games were tight but Roscrea came out with a 4-2 win and in the last game Dingle were the opposition with Roscrea coming out 5-1 victors. After all the scores were totted up Roscrea finished in second place with a feeling of what might have been if luck were on their side.

The U16 had five matches to play and in the first were Waterford which they beat 4-2, the second was a tough game against Clare which they lost 5-1, things were not looking good but the team rallied to draw 3-3 with a strong Kerry team. The last two games were played against first limerick which Roscrea won 6-0 and Cork which they also drew 3-3. After a mixed start which left the team in a poor position they came back well to finish a very respectable third place. Both teams did themselves proud and represented the school impeccably, it was tough to lose by such a small margin in the case of the U19 team but this will to their experience for next year’s competition where all eligible to play again. U19 team: Enda Moloney, John McCabe, Tony O’Connor, Paddy Quinlan, Conal Teehan(sub) U16 team: Jack Finnegan, William Cummins, Cian Cordial, Padraic Marks, Ruairi Murphy(sub) Coach: Mr. Hogan.
